The Downtown Eastside Central Kitchen is a non-profit food preparation and delivery service operated by the PHS, and made possible by support from Sanford Housing Society and BC Housing. It is dedicated to combatting malnutrition among the community’s low-income people. Residents of every PHS-operated housing project in the DTES receive at least one hot meal a day and residents participating in more supportive programs receive three hot meals a day. This program has its own particular challenges, in that it is often difficult to get food for people in run down SRO’s without elevators.

Tragically common in the Downtown Eastside, malnutrition can be a complicating factor in almost every other health problem in this community encounter, but unlike other illnesses, it is 100% preventable and treatable.

DTES Central Kitchen meals are designed to provide the maximum nutritional value possible by prioritizing fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates to compensate for the nutritional deficiencies that are common in the Downtown Eastside. Residents are also offered the option of gluten-free, vegan, low-sodium, and vegetarian meal options. In addition to serving more than 900 hot meals per day, the DTES Central Kitchen is a low-barrier employment and life skills training program providing part-time supported positions for 12 local residents in roles ranging from meal delivery by bicycle to food preparation and food service.
