PHS currently provides support and direct service for four Overdose Prevention Sites (OPS) – three in the heart of the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver, and one embeeded in the PHS-managed supported housing project, the Johnson Street Community, in Victoria.

These sites operate as lifeguard stations for drug consumption, providing a welcoming and culturally safe environment, harm reduction supplies, sterile environments for safer drug consumption, lifeguards to witness consumption, best practices education for drug consumption, and low-barrier employment opportunities for community members.

Since December 2016, PHS OPS have facilitated over 130,000 visits and reversed over 1,000 overdose events, without a single fatality. The Vancouver OPS are predominantly staffed by community members with lived experience in illicit drug consumption and dependence and have either been at risk of overdose themselves, or have lost friends and family to overdose death.

These services are supported by Vancouver Coastal HealthIsland Health, BC Housing and the City of Vancouver.
