The Interurban Gallery is a volunteer centred community art space in the Downtown Eastside. The programming, and exhibits are designed to engage the community in a welcoming and inclusive live art space and to increase cultural tenure for those who have been rejected at the entrance of most galleries in the city.
The Interurban has been serving the DTES community and surrounding neighbourhoods with outstanding visual art exhibitions, arts programming and classes, event space, community activities, new and multi media exhibition, and most importantly, an accessible friendly space for low income artists and residents from the community to exhibit and develop their work.
Since its inception in 2003, the Gallery’s mission has been to stimulate and sustain the vitality of the arts, cultural exchanges and promote emerging artists in the DTES to foster a cultural collective. To fulfill this mission, the Interurban actively pursues arts mentorship within the community it serves, fostering a collective spirit among artists, teachers and students, community activism and the general public.
The Interurban Gallery is a not-for-profit organization marginally funded in part by the PHS Community Services, however survives on the generosity of its volunteers, members and friends.
