The Johnson St. Community – Supervised Consumption Site (JSC SCS) opened quickly as a temporary Overdose Prevention Site (OPS) in response to the overdose crisis in 2016. It was unique as it was an early OPS located in a housing project and only for use by residents and their guests. It received Health Canada’s exemption as a Supervised Consumption Site (SCS) in late 2017.

The JSC-SCS was the first permanent SCS to open on Vancouver Island and is still the only SCS located in a housing site. It remains an embedded service for tenants and guests at Johnson Street Community.

The site includes a reception area where people can access harm reduction supplies; a consumption area that is monitored by trained staff and a post-use area for further monitoring and engagement.

This location offers a range of health services, including an on-site PHS medical clinic, harm reduction education and links to addiction treatment services.
