Shelter, clinical supports

A former long-term care hospital in Saanich is providing temporary shelter for a small community of formerly homeless people. Residents are in the process of obtaining permanent housing.

Operating 24/7, residents have private and shared rooms, lockers for personal belongings and receive three meals a day. There are embedded clinical services and an overdose prevention site operated by SOLID Outreach Society. Outreach staff from BC Housing and the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction are supporting a transition to permanent housing.

PHS operated a temporary emergency shelter in Victoria’s Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre Arena in the spring and fall of 2020. That effort successfully sheltered and subsequently housed approximately 50 people.  The Arena shelter reopened in 2021, and residents were subsequently relocated to Mt. Tolmie when it was not possible to further extend the lease.
