Integrated Housing Team

The PHS Integrated Housing Team has provided tenant support since 2009. We operate 365 days per year within both PHS and Atira Property Management SRO’s located in the vicinity of the DTES. Our services are available to over 300 tenants of the four buildings from which we operate: Hotel Canada, Hutchinson Block, The Carl Rooms, and the Beacon Hotel (whose residents have been relocated to the Gastown Hotel for the duration of the BC Housing P3 renovation project).

The population the IHT serves is a marginalized community familiar with neglect. Our aim is to assist them in maintaining and improving their health, maintaining their tenancy and achieving any goals they may have by connecting them with community resources.

Those goals are often improving their housing, using safe harm reduction practices, accessing health care, improving food access, accessing Ministry, legal or financial supports. Through a consistent, pragmatic approach we have been successful in helping residents achieve their goals while supporting them as they learn to meet them on their own. By being on site every day of the year we are able to be in constant contact with a resident’s clinical care teams, legal representation, etc., to ensure appointments are met (often with our accompaniment), medications are administered correctly and, when crises occur, are addressed immediately.

When a resident moves from one of our projects, we are able to follow up with them until our supports are no longer needed or other community resources have been found.  In an effort to bring about a feeling of community to our disenfranchised tenant, we program regular outings and events such as hikes, baseball games, community kitchens and acupuncture, to name a few.

We work closely with the Vancouver Coastal Health Primary Outreach Services Hotel Team and the Portland Clinic to provide onsite health care to a population that is unable to access community clinics within the DTES. The IHT and Atira partnership is one of constant communication to working towards a common goal: the betterment of our shared community.
