Intermediate Accountant

PHS Community Services Society is recruiting an Intermediate Accountant to work at our headquarters.

Working closely and collaboratively with the PHS accounting team in a fast-paced environment, the Intermediate Accountant assists the Controller by ensuring all aspects of inputs and outputs to/from the general ledger are accurate, reliable and timely.

This is a multi-directional role that requires flexibility and attention to detail. The Controller depends on the Intermediate Accountant to turn data from a variety of input sources into reliable, accurate and timely financial metrics and reports. The role contributes to keeping the accounting and financial processes of PHS up to standard and ensures accurate internal financial reporting and controls.

The Intermediate Accountant has access to highly sensitive information for the purpose of payroll and new project analysis. This position is bound by confidentiality and reports to the Controller.

Responsibilities

Job duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Ensuring efficient, accurate and timely inputs into the accounting system including receipts, payments, receivables, payables, preparing journal entries for accruals, bank reconciliations and other supporting working papers as needed.
  • Efficient, accurate and timely invoicing and collection of all accounts receivable, coding vendor invoices for entry into the accounting system, preparing journal entries for accruals, bank reconciliations and other supporting working papers as needed.
  • The role ensures purchase order to payment and GL posting process is working efficiently and reconciliation and integration between sub-ledger and GL is timely and effective.
  • Assist the Controller with preparing and maintaining working paper reconciliations and schedules for all relevant balance sheet accounts such as prepaid, accounts receivables, accounts payable, accruals, deferral schedules, capital assets, amortizations and deferred capital contributions.
  • Providing details and supporting documentation for any amounts reported on financial statements requested by internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist in preparing GST & PST returns quarterly for PHS and affiliates.
  • Assisting with monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements.
  • Assist with forecasting and budget preparation as assigned by management.

Education and experience

The ideal candidate for this role has the following qualifications and skills:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business or related field.
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA) is preferred.
  • Minimum three years of accounting experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills.
  • Advanced level proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel.
  • Non-profit accounting knowledge (i.e., fund accounting & deferral method) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics GP software an asset.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be self-directed.
  • Works well as a member of a team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with employees at various levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrates good writing, record-keeping and organizational skills.
  • Flexible and willing to adapt in a fast-paced environment.

Terms of employment

Job type: Permanent, full-time.

Salary: $65,000 – $75,000.

Benefits: Extended healthcare, dental, vision care, municipal pension plan.

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9 am – 5 pm.

This is an excluded permanent full-time role.
